Pennine Horizons is a new community resource and visitor attraction. Themed heritage trails will be linked through a series of 'gateway' sites or visitor centres, offering trail information, exhibitions, learning facilities and access to a wealth of heritage material.

Trails

The South Pennines combine a unique landscape with outstanding industrial heritage. Pennine Horizons E-Trails provide the opportunity to discover the area on foot and by public transport whilst accessing the heritage and history of the landscape through audio or printed guides.

Hubs

A central gateway or visitor centre will create a focal point for the Pennine Horizons’ heritage and archive materials. It will be a place for people to learn and to be inspired, to discover and to enjoy, a place to set out on a trail and a place to return to.

The Pennine Horizons story is about the 1000 year relationship between local people and the dramatic Pennine Landscape, during the gradual move from an agricultural to an industrial way of life. An amazing spirit of enterprise laid the foundations for the Industrial Revolution, which in turn shaped the entire modern world.

Pennine Horizons is not the story of just one community. Once established in the Calder Valley, the aim is for the project to extend across the South Pennines area. Many other communities are already showing an interest in becoming sites for future visitor centres, creating links across the region.
